چکیده

The purpose of this article is to improve existing lower bounds on the chromatic number χ. Let μ1, . . . , μn be the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix sorted in non-increasing order. First, we prove the lower bound χ > 1 + maxm{ ∑m i=1 μi/ − ∑m i=1 μn−i+1} for m = 1, . . . , n − 1. This generalizes the Hoffman lower bound which only involves the maximum and minimum eigenvalues, i.e., the case m = 1. We provide several examples for which the new bound exceeds the Hoffman lower bound. Second, we conjecture the lower bound χ > 1 + s+/s−, where s+ and s− are the sums of the squares of positive and negative eigenvalues, respectively. To corroborate this conjecture, we prove the bound χ > s+/s−. We show that the conjectured lower bound is true for several families of graphs. We also performed various searches for a counter-example, but none was found. Our proofs rely on a new technique of considering a family of conjugates of the adjacency matrix, which add to the zero matrix, and use majorization of spectra of self-adjoint matrices. We also show that the above bounds are actually lower bounds on the normalized orthogonal rank of a graph, which is always less than or equal to the chromatic number. The normalized orthogonal rank is the minimum dimension making it the electronic journal of combinatorics 20(3) (2013), #P39 1 possible to assign vectors with entries of modulus one to the vertices such that two such vectors are orthogonal if the corresponding vertices are connected. All these bounds are also valid when we replace the adjacency matrix A by W ∗A where W is an arbitrary self-adjoint matrix and ∗ denotes the Schur product, that is, entrywise product of W and A.

Unified spectral bounds on the chromatic number

One of the best known results in spectral graph theory is the following lower bound on the chromatic number due to Alan Hoffman, where μ1 and μn are respectively the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix: χ ≥ 1+μ1/−μn. We recently generalised this bound to include all eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. In this paper, we further generalize these results to include all eigenva...

Spectral Bounds on the Chromatic Number

The purpose of this paper is to discuss spectral bounds on the chromatic number of a graph. The classic result by Hoffman, where λ1 and λn are respectively the maximum and minimum eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph G, is χ(G) ≥ 1− λ1 λn . It is possible to discuss the coloring of Hermitian matrices in general. Nikiforov developed a spectral bound on the chromatic number of such matr...

Sharp Bounds on the PI Spectral Radius

In this paper some upper and lower bounds for the greatest eigenvalues of the PI and vertex PI matrices of a graph G are obtained. Those graphs for which these bounds are best possible are characterized.

Interlacing Eigenvalues and Graphs

We give several old and some new applications of eigenvalue interlacing to matrices associated to graphs. Bounds are obtained for characteristic numbers of graphs, such as the size of a maximal (colclique, the chromatic number, the diameter, and the bandwidth, in terms of the eigenvalues of the Standard adjacency matrix or the Laplacian matrix. We also deal with inequalities and regularity resu...

Some remarks on the sum of the inverse values of the normalized signless Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs

Let G=(V,E), $V={v_1,v_2,ldots,v_n}$, be a simple connected graph with $%n$ vertices, $m$ edges and a sequence of vertex degrees $d_1geqd_2geqcdotsgeq d_n>0$, $d_i=d(v_i)$. Let ${A}=(a_{ij})_{ntimes n}$ and ${%D}=mathrm{diag }(d_1,d_2,ldots , d_n)$ be the adjacency and the diagonaldegree matrix of $G$, respectively. Denote by ${mathcal{L}^+}(G)={D}^{-1/2}(D+A) {D}^{-1/2}$ the normalized signles...
